SonicCouture Gu Zheng LiVE DVDR | 1.02GB

The Guzheng is a traditional Chinese instrument dating from the Qin dynasty (c. 200 BC to the rest of us). It is the ancestor of the Japanese Koto as well as several other zither-like instruments found across east Asia. A modern Guzheng typically has 21 strings over movable bridges, and steel strings wound with nylon, although ancient instruments used silk strings. These are mounted on a large resonant half-tube box made of wu-tong wood, and the instrument is typically about 1.7m long. The strings are tuned by both moving the bridges and by adjusting tuning pegs.

Playing the Guzheng

Generally the notes are plucked with the right hand, on which the player wears tortoise-shell finger-picks. The left hand is usually bare, but sometimes used to pluck accompanying notes as well as providing pitch bend and vibrato effects behind the bridge. Sometimes virtuoso performers will use finger picks on both hands. Other playing techniques include tremolo (very fast repeated notes), harmonics, and sweeping glissandos.

The Soniccouture Guzheng Instrument

The SC Guzheng has been extensively recorded in 24 bit 44.1khz stereo. Three articulations were sampled: right hand (finger picks), left hand (flesh), and harmonics (finger picks). Up to ten velocity levels, three round robin alternations for the right hand, and two round robin alternations for the left hand. This ensures natural attack transients with no ‘machine-gun’ repetition.

Across all 21 strings this amounts to 1027 samples totaling just over 2 gigabytes. We provide a method to play the Guzheng in it’s original tuning, or in chromatic tuning, for each format.

The KSP Scripts

The Kontakt version of Guzheng contains extra tools for recreating the natural response of the instrument.

Pitch Bend Processor – This acts on the last note played only, and can be controlled via Aftertouch or another MIDI controller. The pitchbend note can also be set to end on a note within a scale of your choosing.

Glissando Processor – This tool allows you to ‘strum’ the entire Guzheng, and define the range,velocity and other parameters.

Tremolo Processor – Another characteristic technique of Guzheng playing is tremolo. Virtuoso players are able to repeat notes very quickly with just their right thumb, while continuing other parts with the remaining fingers and left hand. This tool allows you to set up and define a Tremolo behaviour that can be switched on or off with a key or controller of your choice.

The ebow ( Energy bow), is a small, hand held device that ‘bows’ the strings of a guitar using an electromagnetic field. It produces a unique guitar sound, with a very slow attack and infinite sustain. To play the ebow, the guitarist holds it over the string, near the pickup or hole, so that the string sits in a small notch on the underside of the eBow. The eBow’s magnets then cause the string to vibrate until it feeds back on itself at its own resonant frequency. This feedback loop is very similar to the well-known amplifier feedback, but a much more controllable version. The player can vary the loudness of the sound by moving closer or further away from the string, as with amplifier feedback. The ebow is switchable from low power mode to high power mode, which gives a strong, harmonically rich sound.

The ebow has been used at one time or another by nearly every guitarist under the sun : Radiohead, Tom Petty, Dave Gilmour, Sigur Ros, NIN, Coldplay, Smashing Pumpkins, The Cure, REM, U2, etc etc…

Creating The Sampled eBow Instrument

We wanted to capture the sound of the ebow for all those non-guitar players out there, or perhaps guitarists who have had problems using it with an acoustic guitar! Two guitars were painstakingly sampled, an acoustic and an electric. Both were sampled with the high and low power ebow setting, with vibrato and then again without vibrato. Several note off samples were recorded for every note, to make the instrument’s response as detailed and lifelike as possible. The level of the note-off sounds can be mixed to taste by the user. The acoustic was recorded in full stereo to give a natural, spacious image. The electric was recorded mono D.I for use with amp simulators or for re-amping.

The high and low power setting can be cross-faded using the mod-wheel -a very expressive effect not possible with a physical ebow! The vibrato samples can be selected using a keyswitch on keys B5/C6 .

“This is a pretty slick collection, and the best of the four packages that I have, IMO. The first section is programmed patches that use a lot of Kontakt built-in effects and what-not. The second section is the largest, and contains more-or-less straight-from-the-synth bass patches, and the third section has actual basses (the kind with strings.) Bass sounds are bass sounds, and there’s only so much wiggle room you have. But that said, the person that made this library knows how to program synths to get modern, useful sounds out of them. As I was stepping through the programs, I could imagine almost every sound being useful in some context. The electro-acoustic section is fairly cool; each sample has three “layers:” a DI layer, a close mic layer, and a room mic layer, and you can blend them with the included script in a simple manner.
